The novel is of an autobiographical nature, with our protagonist being Richard Bach himself, in the story a disillusioned writer and barnstormer who makes a living giving people rides on his airplane. As a result, he has come up with some truly unique and profound concepts for his novels, and Illusions showcases this prominently. It’s safe to say Richard Bach belonged to the second category, especially considering his self-professed disdain for the art of writing when an idea got hold of him, writing became the only way to expunge it. Writers write books for different reasons while some seek fame and money, others have ideas they want to relay to the world at large. Sebastian Faulks’ Human Traces is about two psychiatrists and their attempts to understand the human mind which takes them all over the world. Sebastian Barry’s A Temporary Gentleman is about an Irishman from the other end of the class spectrum whose commission with the British army elevates his status for a time. This month we’re starting with Amor Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow which I was looking forward to very much having loved Rules of Civility but I’m afraid I gave it up although not before I’d worked out that it was about an aristocrat under house arrest at Moscow’s Hotel Metropol in 1922. ![]() ![]() A book doesn’t need to be connected to all the others on the list, only to the one next to it in the chain. ![]() It works like this: each month, a book is chosen as a starting point and linked to six other books to form a chain. Review by: Chantelle, LCA Intern for Library HQ ![]() ![]() One of the motifs that appears in the novel is the idea that humans have to sacrifice their own happiness for the greater good. Everything needs to be sacrificed for the greater good When she takes care of Travis for example, she makes a habit out of telling him the stories her mother used to tell her about the ocean and about the beauty of it. Talking about the oceanĪ common motif in the novel is that Mary frequently talks about the ocean. I'd have liked to see other secondary characters especially Leon in this too, he was only there for one page. I do have to say that even though Emily is the main character, she's not in my favorite list and I also find that the writer doesn't pay much attention to her brother, Navin. I am loving how it is getting darker with each book and art is mesmerizing. The story doesn't really move much further in this as it covers a lot of flashbacks about characters but I didn't mind that as it helped me understand more about those characters. We had a lot of revelations in book four and the same happens here. They also uncover more secrets about stones and storekeepers. Emily along with Vigo and Trellis uncovers some truths about Max.
